The original listing refers to the Central Hotel in the village of Sixmilecross. It is believed the village got its name from a Celtic Cross that once stood in a field at the top of the village and also from its distance of six Irish miles from Omagh. (An Irish mile is often quoted as 2240 yards)
Sixmilecross has a very wide Main Street which used to host a monthly fair or market. This ceased around the time of WW2. It used to have a railway station but this closed in the mid 1960's and the Central Hotel closed a few years later. It is now a private residence.
The Winged Wheel was removed from the hotel and placed over the doorway of the building next door which used to be the local National School and the former home WF Marshall who is sometimes referred to as the 'Bard of Tyrone'. He was a preacher and poet who had a special interest in the local dialect and was the local Presbyterian minister from 1916 to 1928. The building is owned by Mrs. Moffett who runs it as a B&B and as the WF Marshall Centre. The WF Marshall 'Heritage Trail' is a local tourist attraction. I actually met the man once when I was a small boy but I had no idea then how highly regarded he was. I remember my father referring to him as a 'smart man', that was a bit of an understatement.
