A prominent surgeon was staying there at the time, and he told his brother, a member of the House of Lords of the behaviour he had witnessed of what were meant to be the forces of law and order. In fact he was lucky to escape with his life as one of the paramilitary police came looking for him, revolver in hand, apparently to silence him! As a result his brother crossed the floor of the house in a vote and caused Lloyd George to rethink British policies in Ireland, leading to the signing of the Treaty on 6 December 1921. Not many Winged Wheels saw such dramatic events!
